2017 Activity Update

The work of Hawaii Marine Animal Response builds on a legacy of support for Hawaii’s endangered and threatened marine species, field response, monitoring and assessment activity, stranding support, educational outreach and community involvement that began in 2008.

Examples of our work during 2017 include:

  • Recording nearly 2,900 sightings of protected marine species.
  • Team members engaged in shoreline responses, surveys, interventions, escalated support, outreach and education over 3,900 times (more than 10 times per day)
  • Hawaiian monk seal and sea turtle related escalated actions, interventions and emergency responses:  Over 70 times
  • Volunteer and staff hours worked:  over 16,700 (>45 hours per day)
  • Team member engagements with members of the public:  over 65,000
