After 5 years of development activity, Hawaiʻi Marine Animal Response (HMAR) opened our new HMAR Care Center in the fall of 2024. As a key component of our Sea Turtle Support Program, the HMAR Care Center is the only full-time sea turtle emergency care and rehabilitation center on Oʻahu. Oʻahu bears the brunt of the majority of sea turtle strandings in Hawaiʻi - about 75% of our state's total each year. So our new HMAR Care Center plays an important role in the conservation and recovery of sea turtles in Hawaiʻi. In addition to our Monk Seal Support Program and our Seabird Support Program, our HMAR Care Center is a natural extension to our Sea Turtle Support Program and the robust marine protected species and ocean conservation activities that HMAR has maintained throughout our history of operations.
